Last year, Grub Street Philadelphia reported that 25-year-old Rita’s Water Ice was aiming to open 600 stores by the end of 2009, so it’s no surprise that according to QSR Web, the company will open three locations in Manhattan. The first will open February 14, when all visitors between the hours of 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. will get a free regular-size Italian ice (the first 100 customers will get a year’s supply). Rita’s traditionally does these giveaways on the first day of spring (according to Wikipedia, 1.2 million cups were distributed last year in a ten-hour period). In addition to Italian ices made on site, Rita’s serves frozen custard, “gelati” (actually a combination of ice and frozen custard), and blended custard-and-water-ice drinks. QSR Web doesn’t give an address for the first location, but a Rita’s Facebook page reveals it’s at 2486 Broadway near 92nd Street."

Pizzeria Uno Filing for Bankruptcy - Gothamist

Are you going to be ok?

Pizzeria Uno Filing for Bankruptcy - Gothamist: "Pizzeria Uno Filing for Bankruptcy

012010uno.jpg Great, first that place The Smith came along and knocked Pizzeria Uno out of the East Village, then the one on Sixth Ave and 8th Street closed last week. Now the whole goddamn plane has crashed into the mountain: Uno Restaurant Holdings Corp. is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Last week Uno closed 16 'under-performing' restaurants, but the company's marketing guy swears the bankruptcy filing is a good thing, because its restructuring will eliminate a 'burdensome' debt load. You know what else is burdensome? Food snobs' condescending attitude toward Uno's mouth-watering deep dish delicacies. Just because it's a sinister corporate chain doesn't mean it can't be deliciously evil. Go show you're support at one of their remaining NYC locations today!"

Uni Watch » DIYD: Do-It-Yourself Disaster

Uni Watch » DIYD: Do-It-Yourself Disaster: "And speaking of DIY: Paul here. Wouldn’t you like to own one of these sweaters? You can, if you have a knitting machine, because Rick Fleck recently mailed me this officially licensed 1990 knitting guide, which provides sweater patterns for all 14 NFC teams at the time. I’ve scanned the entire guide and put the page scans here. I know exactly zero about intarsia knitting, but I would love it if someone could make a sweater based on one of these patterns.

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say most of you reading this probably don’t know how to knit. But maybe your significant other does, hmmm? Get crackin’, guys."
